Career Summary
Sonya has worked as a social work practitioner in many fields of social work practice, including sexual assault, domestic violence, ageing, disability and social security. Sonya has a long history with the School, both as a student (undergraduate and postgraduate) and employee in casual and more recently tenured employment.
Social work is a professional discipline that aims to promote social change and individual and social well-being. This focus upon change as the profession’s core purpose is embedded within an ethical framework that reflects a commitment to human rights and social justice. These two fundamental dimensions of social work practice – change and ethics – have acted as key concepts for defining a strategic and meaningful direction for Sonya’s research and educational activities at UTAS. Most recently, Sonya’s research interests have been focused upon social inclusion. She is currently working on a project that explores the links between social inclusion, mental health policy and the ‘recovery’ model of mental health practice.
