HAB211 Van Diemen's Land: Contested History, Contested Place

This unit covers the period from Aboriginal settlement of the Tasmanian mainland to eventual exile and formation of the Bass Strait Island communities; Issues explored include: traditional Aboriginal social and political structures, culture and the economy; colonial contact history (examined on a regional basis); the influence of British theories of race on Colonial administration and policy development; Aboriginal response to the process of colonization and dispossession. The unit also includes consideration of the Black War, Conciliation (the Friendly Mission and G. A. Robinson), the Wybalenna and Oyster Cove establishments, sealers and the Bass Strait Islanders, and an Overview of the 'History Wars': a close examination of the origins and current position of the debate that challenges contemporary interpretations of Tasmanian Aboriginal history.
