This seminar-based unit engages students with a range of theories and debates found within anthropology since its emergence as a distinctive discipline, covering therefore both classic and contemporary anthropological thought. Most issues will be canvassed through the use of paired readings, whereby one reading might elaborate a particular theory whilst its pair provides ethnographic description utilising the theory. In this way an appreciation will be gained in how different theories influence the organisation of anthropological data and its interpretation. The debates aroused by the different theories will then be canvassed. Throughout the unit it will become evident how these debates have shaped (and continue to do so) the discipline of anthropology.
