Unit Detail

HAB247 Aboriginal Education

Explores policy and practice in Aboriginal education in Australia, and examines the tensions raised by, appropriateness, effectiveness and consequences of, formal education in remote, rural and urban Aboriginal communities. The unit outlines the governmental and identity political processes which shape contemporary educational policy and practice in its attempt to accommodate and respond sensitively to Aboriginal cultural difference. It includes critical consideration of a number of exemplary aspects of Aboriginal education, and pursues the findings of that consideration to consider theories of cultural and identity multiplicity. It concludes by exploring attempts being made to respond to that complexity.
