This unit introduces the students to the major philosophical theories about the nature of art, aesthetics and creativity. These are examined through writings from both the Western Analytic and Continental traditions, represented by the views of such classic authors as Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and 20 th Century and contemporary constributions to philosophy of art. Depending on the emphasis, this unit may also dwell on feminist writers and authors who critique colonial art and represent non-Western views on art and creativity. Further breadth and depth of understanding of the nature of arts is provided by the study of writers such as Tolstoy, Freud, Benjamin and Adorno.
