Career Summary
Originally educated in Hobart at Taroona Primary, Taroona High School and Hobart Matriculation College, Professor Denholm entered the Hobart Teacher’s College in 1970 to undertake training in primary education. Upon graduation he taught both high and primary school deaf students. In 1974 he completed study in the education of the deaf at the University of British Columbia and returned to work in primary education and in the integration of hearing impaired students. He later completed a Bachelor of Education (special education and history) and a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia in 1979.
Professor Denholm accepted an academic appointment at the School of Child and Youth Care, University of Victoria, British Columbia. During these 12 years, he was involved in the education of school-based child and youth care professionals and completed a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, specifically adolescent psychology. His thesis was entitled, The psychological effects of hospitalisation on adolescents within the post-hospitalisation environment. A number of publications and texts were produced while in Canada, including the best-selling Professional child and youth care: The Canadian perspective. Following three consultations in the Gaza Strip with traumatised and disabled youth, Dr. Denholm maintained a long interest in the psychological effects of hospitalisation and trauma, general adolescent health and well-being and associated factors such as coping, resilience and disability. He has supervised research higher degree candidates in the areas of children’s humour, Down Syndrome, nursing intuition and clinical nursing practice, counselling theory, therapeutic adventure programming, disability in families, youth and social support and HIV AIDS.
Professor Denholm commenced at the University of Tasmania in 1991 and as well as teaching educational psychology he initiated the postgraduate program in counselling. He has been a practising psychologist for over 25 years specialising in children and youth. He is a former Chair of the Australian Psychological Society College of Educational and Developmental Psychology, is a member of three editorial boards of peer-refereed journals and has been a member of both the Canadian and Australian Down Syndrome Associations. He has conducted research in Thailand and Fiji and has been the external reviewer for the Hong Kong Institute of Education. Professor Denholm served for 8 years as the Director of the Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies which publishes the national journal, Youth Studies Australia.
In 1993 he was awarded the University of Tasmania Teaching Excellence Award. In 1996 he concluded his coordination of the University of Tasmania Kids On Campus program which over a 5 year period involved 1200 children. He is the Founder and for 8 years was the Musical Director of the ABC Giving Tree Children's Choir and, is a former Musical Director of the Australian Rosny Children’s Choir. He was the inaugural Academic Advisor of the UTas Chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society and is the UTas representative and Chair of the Tasmanian Veterans Childrens Education Scheme. In 2004 he was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Community Engagement.
Professor Denholm served as the Dean of Graduate Research, University of Tasmania from 1998 - 2007. In 2006 he co-edited a text with Professor Terry Evans of Deakin University entitled 'Doctorates Downunder: Keys to successful doctoral study (ACER). A follow-up text, 'Supervising Doctorates Downunder: Keys to effective supervision in Australia and New Zealand (ACER), was published in June 2007. Recent publications appear in International Journal of Nursing Practice, Youth and Society, Journal of Sociology and, Risk Analysis: An International Journal. In 2008 he published his second children’s story entitled: Grandpa Jack and the hunt for the elusive snoogleberry.
Professor Denholm currently has fractional appointments with the School of Education and the Conservatorium of Music and is supervising doctoral candidates in both Schools.
