Marilyn Smith is the Coordinator of Voice Studies at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. In addition she examines for the AMEB and is State secretary of The Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Career Summary
Marilyn Smith began her training at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music under the late Cecil Trowbridge. Upon graduating, Marilyn won the State final of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition (now Young Performers).
Winning the inaugural Ida Doubleday Scholarship for the most outstanding young Melbourne musician of 1980 enabled her to pursue further studies in London with the late Erich Vietheer and Paul Hamburger.
Contracts with Kent Opera, Opera Viva, Buxton Festival Opera and Oper voor Vlaanderen preceded six years with Opera North (Leeds) where she remained until her return to Tasmania at the end of 1990.
Since returning to Australia, Marilyn has maintaned an active performance career. She is a regular soloist with the TSO, having performed in a variety of concerts, including an Opera Gala with Richard Bonynge, Beethoven's 9th Symphone, Schubert's Mass in Ab, Mendelssohn's A Mid-Summer Night's Dream, Adam's Grand Pianola Music and Andriessen's De Staat for New Music Tasmania, Flora La Traviata, Mercedes Carmen and Suzuki Madama Butterfly. She has performed with Hobart-based IHOS OPERA, as the Mother in Mikrovion and as Antigone in To Traverse Water for the Melbourne International Festival.
