Born in England, Beryl Sedivka was educated in France, where she studied with Marcel Ciampi, teacher of Hepzibah and Yaltah Menuhin, Marcel Gazelle, Cecile Ousset, the Australian Lyall Duke and many others.
Career Summary
Awarded a awarded a Diploma in Pianoforte at the Paris Conservatoire, Beryl Sedivka completed her studies in London with the celebrated pianist Solomon and the composer Franz Reizenstein.
Under the name of Diana Merrien she won the Harriet Cohen International Medal and appeared extensively on television and as soloist with a number of British Symphony Orchestras as well as in recitals and broadcasts in Great Britain, Ireland, France, Belgium and Italy.
Since coming to Australia in 1961 Beryl Sedivka has played regularly for the ABC in concerto performances, broadcasts and recitals.
For a number of years she was also a member of the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music Trio with her husband, the violinist Jan Sedivka and the distinguished cellist Sela Trau.
Research Interests
Beryl Sedivka has introduced many works by Australian composers including Peter Sculthorpe, Don Banks, Ian Cugley, Don Kay, Barrie de Jersie, James Penberthy and Larry Sitsky, whose 'Mystical Preludes' were dedicated to her.
Teaching
Beryl Sedivka is currently Musician in Residence and Lecturer in Advanced Pianoforte Studies and Accompaniment at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music.
