Career Summary

Kate lectures in Asian history and previously held teaching and research positions at Monash University and the University of New South Wales. She has served as reviews editor of the journal South Asia and is currently an editor of the H-NET discussion list H-ASIA.


Research Interests

Kate is a specialist in Indian history, with a focus on the eighteenth century, in particular Tipu Sultan and the kingdom of Mysore. A cultural historian, she has carried out research into the symbolic and religious underpinnings of legitimacy and authority. Her book on this subject was published in 1997. A current research project is a study of the dream register of Tipu Sultan. Kate also works in the area of collecting and display of Asian objects in galleries and museums - another ongoing research project involves an analysis of the form and history of the Ronald M. & Catherine H. Berndt Asian Collection in the Berndt Museum of Anthropology, University of Western Australia.

Teaching

Kate teaches units in Asian history, with an emphasis on religion and culture. She contributes to teaching first-year history and is currently History Honours co-ordinator. She also contributes lectures to the Asian studies program in the School of Asian Languages and Studies.
