Exchange Programs and Scholarships

Each year, the French government makes available a number of stipends which allow successful applicants to spend up to eight months as a teacher-helper (assistant(e))in a French lycée or collège. The immediate responsibility of a teacher-helper is to assist local English teachers; however, in the process, they pick up a lot of extra French as well. In the recent past, most applications from within Tasmania have been successful. A monthly salary is provided, but accommodation and travel are not covered in this scheme. Various other opportunities for work and study (in France or in New Caledonia) are advertised on relevant noticeboards. More information is also available directly from the French Embassy.

Annually, the Goddard Sapin-Jaloustre scholarship trust makes available a number of scholarships in support of Australian nationals pursuing courses of study or instruction, or conducting research or other projects in France. Smaller scholarships are currently in the order of $2,500-$3,000, and larger scholarships in the order of $5,000-10,000.
