Bachelor of Arts (English)
My name is Anna Jakins. I'm currently studying in my third year of an Arts degree concurrent with a Diploma of Languages in German. My aim is to complete my diploma and Arts degree, with a double major in English and Geography and Environmental Studies and a minor in Journalism and Media Studies, at the end of this year. I have been admitted to the Deans Roll of excellence for 2003 and 2004. This year I have been fortunate enough to receive the Goethe Institute German/Journalism award, which enables me to study for 8 weeks at the Goethe Institute in Berlin at the end of this year. As a part of this award I am coordinating the German Radio program 'Deutsche Ecke' which is to be aired weekly on Edge Radio in semester 2.
Studying within the school of English, Journalism and European languages has for me been an extremely rewarding experience. My study interests cover a broad range of topics and the school has provided me with opportunities to follow these interests and develop my skills in all areas of study. Studying English, German and Journalism has allowed me to experience a wide range of subjects from all facets of the school, all of which I have found interesting and enjoyable. I am hoping to undertake an honours year next year, however haven't yet been able to decide which facet to concentrate on! Nevertheless, the approachability and helpfulness of individuals within the school has been excellent in helping me to make this decision.
Having studied a wide range of subjects, I have left the doors for employment wide open. I feel it is especially beneficial to have studied a foreign language as it easily facilitates employment and communication abroad. During my time in Germany at the end of this year I will be interested to investigate the possibilities for further study or employment abroad. But for now I am happy to continue with my studies and look forward to the challenges of an honours year in 2006. After that, the possibilities are endless!
I sincerely recommend studying within the school of English, Journalism and European Languages. The teaching staff have been exceedingly helpful, approachable and supportive. It has been a truly rewarding and inspiring experience that has provided me with endless possibilities and multiple skills that will help me in further study and employment.
