Isabel (Yanjun) Wang graduated from UTAS with both Master of Education and Master of Education (Honours) degrees, in 2005. In February 2006, Isabel joined the School of Asian Languages and Studies as a lecturer in Chinese (Mandarin) language, based on the Launceston campus. In 2007, she extended her teaching to include students on the Hobart campus.


Research Interests

Isabel has a strong interest in the area of culture and communication in tertiary education. In the past few years, she has published several papers in journals in the field of language teaching, and has presented papers at international conferences. Her current project, funded through a Teaching Development Grant, is a flexible approach to developing writing skills for students of Elementary Chinese. Isabel is developing a set of on-line activities designed to assist adults in the process of learning Chinese characters. The activities include animated stroke creation for teaching stroke order and exercises to test usage of characters. The target is to have materials available for beginner learners by semester 1 next year.

Teaching

In 2007 Isabel won a Teaching Merit Certificate, nominated by students. Isabel coordinates the Chinese language program on the Launceston campus, where she is involved in the teaching of the school's first, second and third year units. Furthermore, she also contributes to the Asian studies program. Isabel enjoys teaching and her previous experience of teaching English in China has given her an understanding of the ongoing educational needs of language students.
