Kaz was educated at the University of Melbourne. Before joining the School in August 2004 she taught at the University of Melbourne, RMIT and Swinburne University in a range of subject areas including social and political theory, Chinese studies, Asian studies and media studies.
Research Interests
Kaz's research interests usually (but not always) revolve around China. She has a strong interest in contemporary social and cultural theory, and has published on feminist theory and postcolonial theory. Generally Kaz is interested in how contemporary theory (particularly in the areas of postcolonial studies and modernity) can be brought to the area of China Studies. Her specific research interests include theorising population control in China, governance in China and contemporary Chinese art. She has been a visiting scholar at Peking University, and an editor of the Melbourne Journal of Politics.
In addition, she has carried out a number of research projects concerned with higher education in Australia, specifically the concept of 'the first year experience' for postgraduate students.
Teaching
In August 2004, Kaz joined the School as a lecturer in Asian Studies based at the Hobart campus. Kaz enjoys teaching and has extensive teaching experience in Melbourne and China - Renmin University (Beijing) and Shengyang University (north-east China).
In 2007 Kaz was awarded a Teaching Merit Certificate in recognition of her teaching skills and commitment and in 2008 was awarded a Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning.
