Yoji started his teaching career at Tsukuba University in Japan. In 1993, he moved to Australia to take up a position at Monash University and then at the University of Melbourne. He joined the University of Tasmania in 2001 as associate lecturer in Japanese and is based on the Hobart campus.
Research Interests
His areas of research interest include Japanese language teaching, maintenance/loss of minority languages, language use and identity among second-generation Australian Japanese, language testing and language use in business contexts. He has publications in various areas of applied linguistics.
Teaching
In 2007 Yoji received a Teaching Excellence Award in recognition of good teaching practice. 2007 Teaching Excellence Award Yoji enjoys teaching Japanese language enormously. He was trained as a teacher of Japanese as a foreign language at the International Education Center and National Language Research Institute, both in Tokyo.
He has extensive experience in textbook development. He was co-author, audio-visual material developer and voice actor in textbook series including Situational Functional Japanese (Tokyo: Bonjinsha, 1992) and IMA! (Melbourne: Heinemann, 1999-2000). In addition to teaching commitments, Yoji is currently the Sub-Dean and a member of the Faculty of Arts Teaching and Learning Committee.
