Pam Allen has been Head of School since 2006 and is lecturer of Indonesian and Asian Studies on the Hobart campus.
Research Interests
Her research interests include contemporary Indonesian literature, and popular culture, with a particular interest in postcolonial studies, gender issues and minority ethnic voices. Her publications include articles on contemporary literature as well as translations into English of Indonesian fiction. She was funded by the Australian Society of Authors for the translation of the Indonesian novel Saman. She is currently researching the impact of regional autonomy on literature and the arts in Indonesia with a particular focus on Bali and West Sumatra. Pam's current project is an IRGS funded investigation of "Cultural links between Indonesia and Javanese overseas in Suriname and in New Caledonia".
Teaching
In 2007 Pam won a Carrick Citation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning - for exemplary guidance of student learning through the use of authentic and engaging strategies designed to facilitate students・deep understanding and appreciation of culture and language.
Carrick Citation Award
Pam teaches undergraduate units in Indonesian language, Indonesian literature and Indonesian popular culture, as well as undergraduate Asian Studies units. At Honours level she teaches and supervises in both the Indonesian and the Asian Studies programs. She is currently supervising or co-supervising 7 graduate students. She is frequently involved in delivery of professional development in both Indonesian and Asian Studies to teachers at primary, secondary and senior secondary level.
