Career Summary
Leigh Hobba has exhibited extensively since 1976. He is highly regarded as a practitioner of performance and new media art practice. In 1980 he was selected as Australia's representative at the prestigious Biennale of Paris, Museum of Modern Art. and has continued a national and international exhibition career since then.
Hobba’s work has been shown at major Australian Galleries including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, ArtSpace, Performance Space, Australian Centre for Photography (Sydney), Queensland Gallery of Art, Institute of Modern Art and Fireworks Gallery in Brisbane, Western Australian Gallery of Art, the Experimental Art Foundation and Festival Centre Gallery in Adelaide, National Gallery of Victoria, Monash University Gallery, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Glen Eira Gallery in Melbourne, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, CAST and Plimsoll Gallery in Tasmanian.
He has exhibited in the Australian International Sydney Biennale and the major bi-annual survey of contemporary Australian practice, Perspecta.
Invitations to exhibit overseas include Festival d'automne in Paris, Fotofeiss in Scotland, WRO, Cracow Poland, Centre International Creation Video, Montbeliard, France, London Video Umbrella, Containers '96 in Copenhagen and Points of Entry in New Zealand.
In 2004 he was one of 6 Australian artists chosen by an ARC funded University based research team for a curated solo survey show with published monograph. This will result in a major solo survey show of his work over the last 30 years.
Research Interests
Leigh Hobba's research interests include installation potentials of sound and moving image in art practice, sound based performance incorporating expanded media, multimedia, its context and place within art practice and the history of technology as it has been applied to art.
Hobba has been active as a writer on New Media with articles on his own work and others appearing in major publications including Island Magazine, ArtLink and Continuum.
Hobba's curatorial practice has also been significant with 1 international and 3 thematically linked exhibitions that have been concerned with the ideas and promotion of 'New Media" practice.
These are;
ANZART-in HOBART (1981); An international exchange exhibition and conference involving over 80 practitioners.
OUT of THE ANALOGUE (1995); an exhibition of historical and contemporary work by artists engaged in Temporal Media practice, 1970-1995.
PULSE FRICTION: an exhibition/survey of art and attitudes affected by the first wave of artists' access to media technologies and strategies of media based artwork through the 60's and 70's.
SPATIAL: Artists that work with sound.
Teaching
Leigh Hobba teaches and is alternating Head of E-Media, and Co-ordinator of the Bachelor of Time-Based Media degree.
